Undersong 23:01

about

Following the online ‘lockdown’ collaboration that produced ‘Onward’, Roger Harmar and Phil Durrant team up again to produce ‘Undersong’ which was recorded in Harmar’s Hove-based studio.

‘Undersong’ explores their take on Terry Riley’s ‘Time Lag Accumulator’ system which explores looping/live sampling ideas using two tape recorders. Instead, Harmar and Durrant use their individual digital systems to explore a looping/anti-looping aesthetic. They also expand on Brian Eno’s unsynchronised looping concepts – used in ‘Discreet Music’, and ‘Thursday Afternoon’. Each musician has personal effects chains that utilise multiple looping assemblages which enable the creation loops of different lengths. Like Eno, the use of silence within the repetitions creates unpredictable reiterations that slowly overlap and evolve.

With their distinctive approaches to looping and sonic treatments/playing techniques, the Harmar/Durrant duo permit the addition of individual personalities to impact on and mutate the resulting looping/anti-looping soundscape.
